Doris I. Day, 87, of Columbus, passed from this life at 5:35 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, 2022, at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour.
Doris was born in Oscaloosa, KY, a small community in southeastern Kentucky. She was the 13th of 13 children born to Grant and Mary Ison.
She was married to Doug Day for 62 years. He preceded her in death in 2019.
Survivors include her children Wade Day(Diane Moore) and Karen Day of Columbus and grandchildren Steven Day and Chrissy Day also of Columbus.
After attending a one room schoolhouse most of her childhood, she ventured out to Lees Junior College and obtained her teaching license. She returned home and taught school in Kings Creek, KY where she met the love of her life, Doug Day, and were married in 1957. They enjoyed their life in the coal country of Kentucky, but an opportunity arose for Doug in Columbus, Indiana. They relocated in 1959 and established their forever home.
Doug worked hard and Doris stayed busy with 2 kids. Soon she felt the need to work to supplement their income and began a couple of factory jobs with Arvin Industries and Cosco, Inc. Soon, however, she would be needed in the trucking industry to help Doug get their new business off the ground. She ran the day to day operations as Doug continued to work full time at Cummins Engine Company. She was still working at 87 years old because of her love of the business and because both kids and both grandkids worked with her.
Her duties at Hoosier Air Transport had been trimmed down quite a bit, but her passion to be there every day never left her. Her smile and sense of humor will be missed by all those that were fortunate enough to have worked with her.
Doris enjoyed mowing her huge yard. She would mount her John Deere tractor and spend several hours making her place look great. It was a passion she shared with Doug, and it was really funny watching both of them on 2 tractors racing around the yard like they were in a competition.
Though she didn't have many hobbies, she considered keeping up with the grandkids the most fun thing she could ever do. She also enjoyed her place in Florida whenever she could, but preferred her beautiful home here in Columbus where she was always "close to the action".
A vicious card player, she gave competitive a whole new name. Many weekends and family trips included card games that would last all night.
From teacher to factory worker to trucking executive, she gave it her all. She has instilled a great work ethic in her family and all those that have worked with her and for her. Our beautiful mother and grandmother will be missed every day. The only saving grace is that now she is reunited with the love of her life, Doug.
The funeral will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday with Dennis W. Aud officiating.
