Lena was born Malinda Sexton, in Carter Co. Kentucky. She was the daughter of Rev. George Washington Sexton, of Letcher Co. Kentucky, and Kathryn K Morton Sexton of Limerick, Ireland. George Washington Sexton was the son of Elvira Sexton, and Tivis Benjamin Collins. Some speculate GW took the name Collins, but that is not the case. Tivis and Elvira were never married. Kathryn was the youngest of six children born in Ireland to James and Mary A. Morton. Sometime after the 1910 censes, Malinda changed her name to Lena Ellen. No known reason
