Son of Benjamin Tivis Collins & Elvira Sexton. Some say his parents were never married but a Civil War Pension file alleges that they were. Tivis Collins died during the Civil War.

For most of his life George went by the surname of Sexton, however, he appears in the 1870 census record using the surname Collins, as noted below. He also used the surname Collins for his marriage license and also when he applied for a minor surviving child's pension of a fallen Civil War Soldier. It is likely he used the Collins surname for pension or estate reasons. For most of his documented life, he used the surname Sexton and his children also primarily used the surname Sexton as adults.

Burial in Jimmy Hill Cemetery, per death certificate. His death certificate is in the name of George Sexton. It lists his father as Tivis Sexton, which is incorrect, it should be Benjamin Tivis Collins.
