Bertha Mary Cole
Bertha Cole, age 89, a longtime resident of Gary, SD, passed away at the Hendricks Community Hospital in Hendricks, MN.
Bertha was born July 24, 1897, at Pierson, Iowa, a daughter of Ward and Edith Heaton. As a young girl she moved with her parents first to Sterling, ND and then to a farm north of Gary. She grew up and attended rural schools north of Gary. She then went to Brookings to the Ag College and then to Aberdeen to attend the Aberdeen Normal College. She returned to Gary where she taught school at Districts 23 and 57 north of town for five years. She was united in marriage to Wells Cole at Gary on June 10, 1921. After their marriage they farmed in Antelope Valley until 1944 when they moved to a farm 2 miles northwest of Gary. Her husband passed away in July of 1969. She then moved into Gary where she made her home until her recent hospitalization and death.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Clinton W. and Phyllis of Mankato, MN; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Peden of Rapid City and Mrs. Clarice Schutjer of Oscaloosa, Iowa. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter Donna Marie, one son John Wells, and seven brothers and three sisters.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and was a willing worker in many activities of the church including the UMW and the Sunday school. She was a member for over 50 years of the Peden-Cole American Legion Auxiliary and the Ruth Chapter of the Order of the Easter Star; she served for many years as a 4-H leader in Deuel County and was a member for over 25 years of the Deuel County Extension Clubs. She was also a former member of the Rebekkah Lodge of Gary.
Funeral services were held on March 10, 1987 at 2 pm from the United Methodist Church in Gary with Rev. Russell Peirce officiating.
