Harriet was born in Milton, Morris County, New Jersey. She was the daughter of William and Sarah (Strait) Headley. She was the fifth of eleven children. In 1832 she joined John D. and Mary Struble (Mary being her elder sister) in moving to Ohio. A year later, on July 20, 1833, Harriet married Jacob Merrin (also a native of New Jersey). They had ten children: William Lyman, Sarah Elizabeth, Joseph Headley, John Couse, Mary Helen, Harriet Ellen, Anna Almeda, Jacob Edson, LaGrange Whitcomb, & Theodore Potter.
