Irwin B. Whyte, 96, of Cushing
died Monday in a nursing home in Holstein. Services were held Thursday, June 9, 1986, in the United Methodist Church in Cushing with Rev. Kermit Gladfelter officiating. Burial was in the Cushing Cemetery under direction of Barker Funeral Home of Holstein.
Irwin Blackman Whyte, youngest child of Robert S. Whyte and Clara (Blackman) Whyte, was born May 23, 1890, in Scott Co., Iowa, near Davenport. I.B., as he was called, came to Cushing and Washta area as a lad of eleven with his parents. He attended school in rural Washta and also Cushing, when Cushing school was located in the present Cushing Park. He grew up on farms of his parents, and helped his brothers on their farms. He married Alta Laura Law December 13, 1912, in Grand Meadow. They had six children: Roland, Melvin, Gwendolyn, Dorothy, Charlotte and Lucile. The family farmed in the Grand Meadow and Cushing areas. In 1918 the Whytes moved to South Dakota near Osceola in Beadle County, on IB's brother Ernest's farm. Later they bought a farm of native prairie land.
The lean drought-ridden years in South Dakota proved too great for the family. They moved by train back to Iowa. While living on a farm north of Cushing, his wife Alta became very ill with a respiratory disorder and passed away August 7, 1936. Irwin continued farming until 1943. After living with his children for several years he moved to a home in Cushing where he resided nearly twenty years. He took great joy in helping his grandchildren learn their first steps and first bicycle rides.
In September 1980 his health required he seek help. At age 90 he became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Holstein. In December of that same year his left leg was amputated. He was a member of the Cushing United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, Melvin of Sweetwater, Texas, three daughters, Mrs. Ed (Gwyn) Grell of Cushing, Mrs. Dorothy Stoneking of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Mrs. Jim (Lucille) Williams of Sioux City, fourteen grandchildren, thirty-seven great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren.
