When John Akins was a winner in the Georgia Land Lottery, he and several of his children moved from their homes in Western North Carolina. James was one of those who braved the odds and moved with his father.

James was a farmer. On Augr13, 1846, he married Martha Anderson in Union County, Georgia. Although the couple had several children, only Joseph Lane Atkins survived childhood.

In August of 1861, Akins enlisted in the Georgia Volunteers. Less than a year later, he was killed in the Battle of Malvern Hills, the final battle of the series known as the Seven Days Battles fought outside Richmond, Virginia.

His widow testified to the events surrounding the events of his death when she applied for pension. Reference: Confederate Pension Applications.
