Joseph George Akins was the son of John and Sarah Oliver Akins. On October12, 1851, he married Mirah Elizabeth Flowers in Union County, Georgia. The couple had five children:

Andrew Akins
Mary Akins
Benjamin Akins
Minerva Akins
Sarah Akins

In 1863, Akins enlisted in the Confederate Army. He was assigned to Company F, 6th Regiment of the Georgia Cavalry.

His tenure as a soldier was brief. Per the testimony of his wife in her application for pension, Private Akins became ill and died on July 18, 1863 near Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. Reference Confederate Pension Applications.
