"The last battle he fought was about seven miles North of Charleston, SC by a little stone church house on the side of the road. The little stone church still stands today with its sides riddled with bullet holes. He was killed in a ditch on the side of the road by that church building where his blood ran down the ditch like water. His rifle was thrown in the Charleston River." Charlton's wife Martha Bennett Westberry had a child to another man after Charlton's death. She named him Henry Westberry. He was raised in the home of his natural father and stepmother and renamed George Nicholas (Nichols). George was the father of Anne Nichols, the famous playwright and author of "Abie's Irish Rose."
