Robert "R.G." Howard, 82, of Erie, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2017, at UnityPoint Health-Trinity Rock Island.
Bob was born March 31, 1935, the son of William and Hazel Shepherd Howard at the family home in Erie. He graduated from high school in Laredo, Texas. Bob joined the Army and served in the 82nd Air- borne Division. Upon his discharge, he settled back in Erie and began working for John Deere Harvester, from which he retired in 1992. He married Sally Ryan at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Erie on July 26, 1958. Bob was a diehard Green Bay Packers and New York Yankees fan. He enjoyed watching Westerns, listening to country music and was a World War II history buff. Bob loved politics and was a strong Democrat. He volunteered on the Erie Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife, Sally; children (and spouses), Debra (Rick) Beckstrom, Michael (Deborah Combs) Howard, Matthew (Patricia) Howard, Mark (Carol) Howard, Mary (Andy) Bebon, Marty (Jenny) Howard, Mona Howard and husband, Lou Biel; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and sister, Mary Alice Curry. He was preceded in death by his parents and nine siblings, Viola Betts, Dean Howard, Jeanette Besse, Geraldine Cole, Catherine Nation, Bill Howard, Delores Redell, Darrell Howard and Peggy Mercer.
Burial Wednesday, Dec. 20, at the Fenton Cemetery.
