Martha was born in Hendricks Co., IN the daughter of Joseph and Ann (Day) Plummer. She married Asa Carter 9 Feb 1854. They moved to Iowa in 1863, then to MO, and to Jewell Co., KS in 1873. After 1883 they family settled in the Stafford and Reno county area in KS.

Martha was the mother of eight children: Levi P., Ella, Allen, Adeliza, Mary Ann (who died young), Milton, Rhoda, John J. At her death in 1917, she had 6 living children, 36 grandchildren, and 26 great grandchildren.

She was a member of the First Methodist Church of Sylvia at the time of her death. In her obituary her death was described as, "the solo of human life overpowered by the Hallelujah chorus. This is a Queen's coronation, Heaven. This is the crowning of the saints who have been our parents. They triumph in eternal Life."
