John and wife moved to Van, VanZandt County, Texas from Haralson County, Georgia. He served in the Civil War in the Confederate Army. He was captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi near the end of the war. The day Vicksburg fell to the North, John fired a cannon till the blood ran from his ears.

John was a farmer most of his life. It is supposed that John and his wife lived in Smith County most of their life after they came to Texas.

John Franklin Blackstock is buried in the Mineola City Cemetery in Mineola, Wood County, Texas next to his wife, Margret Ann Jordan Blackstock.

The following inscription is on his grave marker:

"Dust thou art and unto dust thou shall return"
