The funeral service for Marcella Arndt of Hewitt, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 1, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Staples, with Pastor Collins presiding.
Marcella Arndt passed with peace and joy to her Heavenly Home at 1:04 a.m. on Wednesday morning, October 27, 2021, in Staples, MN.
Marcella Luella Meinhardt Arndt, first daughter and second child of Emma (Hannemann) and Arthur Meinhardt, was born in her parents' home, on their farm in Bartlett Township, MN, on March 9, 1928. After graduating from Hewitt High School, Marcella obtained her Teacher's Certificate from the Staples Normal School. She taught country school for 2 years, until her marriage to Elmer G. Arndt on June 10, 1948. Marcella and Elmer made their home in Hewitt, where they raised their five children. After her youngest child started school, Marcella resumed her love of teaching as a Paraprofessional in the Bertha-Hewitt Public School District, until her retirement, 23 years later.
After retiring, Marcella and Elmer enjoyed traveling around the country with the Bertha-Hewitt Marching band; trips with family to Europe; a tour in northeastern United States, to view the Fall leaves; and many, many trips to visit children and grandchildren.
Marcella and Elmer were known for their weed-free garden. Elmer got the credit, but Marcella was the one who did the majority of the weeding and harvesting. Elmer also liked to refer to his three boys as "my three sons. "As if I had nothing to do with it!" exclaimed Marcella.
In the summer of 2003, Marcella and Elmer moved from their home in Hewitt to Staples. Marcella continued to live in this home after Elmer died, in June 2009. When told that the home she was renting might be put on the market, Marcella immediately went to look at apartments at the Staples Lakewood Manor. She fell in love with her apartment on sight, where she lived from June 2013 until her death.
Like her mother and 5 siblings, Marcella loved to be outside. She learned to swim in local creeks with her siblings. As an adult, Marcella obtained her swimming certificate from the Staples Community Pool. Her daily walks were a habit ingrained in her childhood. The daily mileage dipped in her final year of life, but she still was quicker than people in their 20s.
Marcella's phenomenal memory was an asset in playing cards. Pinochle was her favorite, but she was willing - and more than able - to play any game. She played for the joy, not the outcome. Many a time she was sitting in the golden chair, ready to go out, yet would allow another to win if it meant keeping that person interested in playing.
A true servant of the Lord, Marcella volunteered time and talents as a member of Trinity Lutheran Church (Hewitt) Ladies Aid (50 years); Trinity Lutheran Church Ladies Aid (Staples); taught Sunday School,; Release Time, and Vacation Bible School; and enjoyed attending many Bible Study classes over the years. She was also a Lifetime Member of the VFW Auxiliary; Hewitt Senior Citizens; Staples Senior Citizens; and served as an Election Judge.
Marcella was baptized, confirmed, married, and will soon be buried at her beloved Immanuel Lutheran Church, Bartlett Township.
Marcella was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; parents, Emma and Arthur Meinhardt; siblings, Ernest (Eunice) Meinhardt, Ruth (Alan) Smith, Alice (Ray) Rooney, and Roy Meinhardt; and great-granddaughter, Ava Klokstad.
She is survived by children, Lester (Patricia) Arndt, of Lake City, Gene (Roxanne) Arndt, of Hewitt, Roger (Laura) Arndt, of Franktown, CO, Linda, of Staples, and Lori (Brian) Bates, of Staples; 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; brother Arthur (Myrna) Meinhardt of Farmington; sister in-law, Devona Meinhardt of Columbia Heights; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be Marcella's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Active pallbearers will be Gene Arndt, Aaron Arndt, Roger Arndt, Erik Arndt, Brian Bates and Luke Bates.
Memorials will be directed to Bartlett Immanuel Lutheran Church Perpetual Cemetery Fund.
