DEATH CLAIMS MRS SHERWOOD, CALISTOGA PIONEER

Death claimed another pioneer, a daughter of one of the earliest settlers in Calistoga valley when Mrs. S.P. Sherwood passed away last week at her home on the outskirts of Calistoga.

Born on the old Cyrus homestead north of Calistoga, April 26, 1863, Mary Cyrus Sherwood spent her entire life on the old home place, except for temporary absences when she and her husband made their home for brief periods in Elk Grove and Pacific Grove.

She was the eldest daughter of John and Lovina Graves Cyrus, and a granddaughter of Enoch Cyrus whose name has gone down in the history of this state as belonging to a man who led a party of immigrants through the Sierras just a few days before the ill-fated Donner Party. His son John, father of Mrs. Sherwood, but a lad then, later married one of the child survivors of the Donner Party, Lovina Graves.

In 1849, the family moved into the old home which was a landmark on the Healdsburg road until it was destroyed by fire several years ago. The present Sherwood home, erected after the fire, stands on the exact location of the old house.

She leaves a husband, two sons and two daughters.

(Obit published in the Healdsburg, Sonoma Co., CA "The Headsburg Tribune and Enterprise" on June 13, 1940.)

Thanks to Connie Fairfield Ganz for providing Mary's obit.
