Daughter of Benjamin David Hatcher, Sr. 1814-1881 and Martha Green Goode of Boydton, Virginia 1824-1885. Sister to 8 other full siblings and 3 half-siblings born of different mothers from the prior marriages of her father.

She moved to Winfield, Kansas, as a teenager with her mother in 1882 after her father died. When her mother died in 1885, she moved to Cross County, Arkansas to live with relatives and shortly thereafter married at age 17 to Jeremiah Hartwell Snyder 1860-1935 of Jonesboro, Ark. She lived her entire adult life in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

She and Jerry Snyder had six children who survived them, in age order: Sula Snyder (Mrs. Oliver N Warren Sr.) of Forrest City, Ark; Col. Neil Norman Snyder Sr; John Wesley Snyder (US Sec of Treasury under Pres Harry S Truman); William Hartwell Snyder Sr of Memphis; Gene Snyder of Memphis; Dee Mae "Missy" Snyder of Jonesboro.

Snyder's Mother Passes
Washington (UP) - Mrs. Ellen Hatcher Snyder, mother of Secretary of Treasury John W. Snyder, died at Jonesboro, Ark., last night of a heart ailment, the secretary disclosed today. She was 82.

Note: Her death certificate indicates a birth year of 1872 and age at death in 1952 of 80, but this data was based upon a mistake by her youngest daughter, Missy, who provided information for the death certificate. As the newspaper article above stated (which quotes a press release by her son, John W Snyder) her age at death in 1952 was 82, which makes her birth year of 1870. This birth year 1870 comports with census records for 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930, 1940.
