Edith "Budge" Abbot, 85, of Salem, formerly of Marblehead, died peacefully September 25, 2008, at her home, the John Bertram House in Salem.

Miss Abbot was the second of four daughters born in Salem to the late Walter Lyle Abbot and Edith (Brown) Abbot. She grew up on Andover Street and moved with her family every June to spend the summers on Harbor View in Marblehead, eventually settling there permanently after the war.

A serious student with a flair for the arts, she attended Stoneleigh Junior College in Rye, N.H., and then transferred to the Richmond Professional Institute in Virginia to finish up her bachelor's degree. She stayed in Richmond for several years to work with Bishop Robert Gibson of the Virginia Episcopal Church before returning to Marblehead. Fascinated with the intersections of religion and the psyche, Miss Abbot was an admirer of Carl Jung and an avid reader of books on mythology, dreams and art. Later in life, she obtained a master's degree in psychology from Salem Sate College.

She spent many years as a teacher, including stints directing the Stepping Stones Nursery School in Danvers, where she built up enrollment dramatically, and as a religious educator at churches in Brookline and Salem.

Living independently and supporting herself, Miss Abbot managed to balance her work with a life dedicated to helping people. She took care of her elderly mother, Edith Abbot, until her death in 1978, and later worked for the All Care Visiting Nurse Association in Lynn until her retirement in the mid 1990s. A great neighbor and friend to all ages, she had a special rapport with the young. Her door was always open and her cookie jar always full for the neighborhood children, generations of whom came on impromptu visits to discuss skinned knees, show off new toys, and seek advice.

Miss Abbot loved following the news, both local and national, and kept an active, lifelong interest in politics. She was a member of the Marblehead Shipyard Association, the Thread and Needle Society of Salem and Grace Episcopal Church.

She is survived by two sisters, Anne Abbot Willand of Marblehead and Caroline Abbot Zimmerman of Washington, D.C.

Her younger sister, Madeline Abbot Thomas, died in 1986.

She also leaves behind nephews and nieces, John Willand, Peggy Carter, Sarah Zimmerman, Lyle Zimmerman, Miriam Zimmerman and Steve York; her great-nephew, Ben Wil-land; her great-niece, Rebecca York; and numerous friends.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, October 4, at noon at Grace Episcopal Church, 385 Essex St., Salem. Relatives and friends are invited. Arrangements are by Eustis-Cornell Funeral Home of Marblehead.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salem Mission, 55 Margin St., Salem, MA 01970.
