Businessman, Union Civil War Veteran Soldier. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and married Leonara S. Sohn. A member of the Guthrie Grays Militia Company in the late 1850's, he continued to serve when they were consolidated into the 6th Ohio Volunteer Infantry at the start of the Civil War. A Private in Company D throughout the entire war, he participated in all of the major engagements of the Western Theatre after serving in Western Virginia in 1861 at the Battle of Cheat Mountain. The regiment was attached to the Army of the Ohio and Doepke served with them at the Battles of Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Corinth, Perryville, and Stone's River. They were then attached to the 21st Corps of the Army of the Cumberland and saw action at the Battles of Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, and Resaca. After the war, he returned to Cincinnati and entered business with his cousins, Frederick and William H. Alms and formed the Alms and Doepke Company in 1865. They enjoyed a successful business as one of the area's noted department stores and the largest dry goods store in Cincinnati. He later founded the City Hall Bank, which his son, Robert Henry Doepke later assumed control of. He died in 1908 in Cincinnati when he was 69 years old. The business closed in 1954 after the neighborhood fell into decline.
