The daughter of William F. & Augusta Sohn Doepke. Her father with Frederick & William Alms, formed the Alms & Doepke Company soon after they all returned from their service in the Union Army during the Civil War. The company eventually moved into a large building on Central Parkway between Main Street and Sycamore Street. It closed its doors in the spring of 1955 after 90 years as a destination department store.

Alma Doepke Morgenstern was interested in music and cultural activities. She and her husband, Dr. Adolph Morgenstern, were known to travel around the globe to join archaeological digs. She traveled extensively in Europe and Central America and was on one of the first ships to pass through the Panama Canal after its completion.

She was traveling with her Step-Mother to her brother in-law's wedding in Hamburg, Germany in September 1914 when World War I broke out. She was unaware until after they arrived that her brother in-law, Fritz Morgenstern, had joined the German Army with four brothers who had stayed in Germany. Before she returned to Cincinnati, Fritz was killed and another brother was missing.
