She was loved and will be remembered for the many lives she touched as a daycare owner and operator to many children that went on to have very productive lives, and never put herself first when it came to the needs of the many. Barbara was of strong Christian faith and never hesitated to volunteer for anything that would help her family and friends or strangers for that matter. Her studies in social work brought much clarity to her in later years.
Barbara is survived by her daughter, Rita Gail (Butler) Whitney of Chandler, IN; son, Donald Lee Brinker of Los Angeles, CA; sister, Doris Pemberton of Henderson, KY; brothers Jim Houghton and Loran Houghton both of Evansville, IN; grandchildren, Eric Whitney (Amy), Stephen Whitney, Devan Coomes, Kira Coomes, and Lyric Brinker; great-grandchildren, Emmett, Wyatt, Elli, Aden, Brooklyn, and Xavier Whitney; and many nieces and nephews.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Della Staup, Juanita Kissinger, Mary Home, Nellie Cummings, Lois Miller, Joyce Houghton, Mary Houghton, and Donna Marshall; and Brothers, Charles Houghton and James Houghton.
A committal service will be held at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at Sunset Memorial Park Butterfly Garden, 1800 St George Rd., Evansville, IN 47711, with Rev. Sheila Stevens officiating. Published in Courier Press from May 28, to May 30, 2021.
