George Welton Ward was the fourth child of twelve (eleven lived past childhood) of Richard Trulock Ward and Elizabeth SABEY Ward, both originally from England. He was named for his grandfather,George Welton Ward Sr, the man who started the clan in the United States. The entire Richard Trulock Ward family is shown at the right.

George Ward would meet and marry Grace May CLARK on 22 Feb 1899 in Boomer, Pottawattamie, Iowa. Together they would have four children: Hzel Blanche Ward (1900-1973), Welton Richard Ward (1910-1975), Fern Maxine WARD Schween (1913-1939), Lyle George Ward (1917-2011).
