"Margery was born in the U.S. of German heritage, probably in Pennsylvania about 1785. She died before 1850. She was the wife of South Bend pioneer judge, miller, tanner and farmer William C McCartney. They married abt 1802.

She was the mother of 12 children: Hiram M. McCartney, John McCartney, Unknown McCartney, Mary Polly (McCartney) Thomas, Thomas McCartney, Eliza (McCartney) Egbert, William McCartney, Sarah Jane (McCartney) Gish, James M. McCartney, Nathaniel McCartney, Benjamin F. McCartney and Gabrilla A. (McCartney) Crockett. All 12 died of consumption, most in their 30s and 40s.

On property deeds in Clark Co., Ohio, Margery signed with her mark, an X." Written by John McCartney

"And I further direct my executor to provide suitable grave stones to be erected over the following members of my family deceased, to wit -- over my own grave, the grave of my deceased wife, Margery & the graves of my deceased children, William, John, Polly & Sarah, the expense to be paid out of my estate, the same to be provided within a reasonable time after my decease."
