Caleb was the second son and second child (of 12) of Timothy Halstead, Jr. (1658-1735) and his wife Abigail (Carmen) Halstead (1665-1732) originally from Hempstead, Long Island, New York. The family moved to Elizabeth"town," New Jersey after Caleb's father purchased a large land tract south of Elizabeth Creek on March 4, 1721. Caleb became ill shortly after the family's arrival in New Jersey and subsequently died.

Caleb married in Hempstead, New York in 1716 before coming to New Jersey to his wife Jean Pearsall (1695-1760) who was the younger sister of Margery (Pearsall) Halstead, the wife of Caleb's elder brother Timothy Halstead III. Caleb and wife Jean had two sons Jeremiah Halstead (1719-1766) and Caleb Halstead, Jr. (1721-1784) who was born four months after Caleb's premature death.

Caleb's wife Jean remarried two more times after Caleb's death. She ended up being widowed three times.
