John Lyman McCartney was the son of Nathaniel and Abigail M (Parker) McCartney, coming out the Oregon Trail to Scio, Ore., in 1852. After the death of his father in 1856, he appears on the census in 1860 in Chico, Butte, Calif., with his mother and siblings. In 1885 he was a wool grower at Red Bank creek, Tehama Co., Calif. He was the uncle of Red Bluff rancher and builder Charles Edwin McCartney.
