Thomas Nathaniel McCartney was the son of Nathaniel McCartney and Abigail M. (Parker) McCartney. This couple moved from LaPorte Co., Indiana, to Scio, Linn, Ore., in 1852. Thomas was born on the family's land claim, DLC 2167, near Scio. His father died of consumption/TB on 07 Jun 1856.
Thomas then appears on the census with his mother and siblings on 18 Jun 1860 in Chico, Butte, Calif. His mother died 06 Mar 1864, when Thomas was about nine.
Thomas and his siblings received inheritances from his grandfather and uncle in South Bend, Indiana, which provided for their education and support.
On 10 Jun 1880, Thomas was a cattle raiser in Lassen, Tehama, Calif. On 15 Jan 1920, Thomas was a retired cattleman in Chula Vista, San Diego, Calif. On 02 Apr 1930, he lived on the ranch of his nephew, Charles Edwin McCartney, at Hunter Precinct, Red Bluff, Tehama, Calif. He never married.

McCartney Funeral
Held On Wednesday

The funeral of Thomas McCartney, 85 years of age, who passed away at 9:30 o'clock last night, will be held from the Fickert chapel at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Rev. Homer A McCarty officiating.
Mr. McCartney was an old resident of the county, arriving in California 74 years ago from the state of Oregon. He was an uncle of Chas E. McCartney [Charles Edwin McCartney], local contractor.

Funeral services for Thomas N. McCartney, who passed away Monday, were held from the Rickert Chapel yesterday afternoon. Rev. Homer A. McCarty officiating. Interment was in Oak Hill cemetery.
Pall bearers were: Chester Elam, William Ide, Charles Bauder and Dan McCarty.
