I have chosen to go with the birthdate given for Ethel in the 1900 census, versus what is on her stone. TVA records show 1894 also.

Married Dexter Merritt, March 26, 1910. In 1910, Ethel was living with her husband Merritt in the home of his mothers:

Manda Merritt 54
Dexter Merritt 21
Ethel Merritt 17
Lizzie Merritt 19
Jessie Merritt 18

Merritt at this time was a farm laborer and also lived very close to Ethel's father David E.and wife Mary Elizabeth in Knox County.

Dexter and Ethel would have four children:
Child Roy Luther Merritt born Dec, 1910 - died 1934
Child Herbert Merrett born about 1912
Child Ella Merrett born about 1915
Child Lelia Merrett born abt 1920

In 1920, Ethel died of the FLU according to TVA records. Dexter then married again, September 17, 1921 to Corda Fielder in Union County. In 1910, Corda is living with her parents, along with her 3 year old son Conda. There is no mention of a father.

From TVA Records: Ethel Merritt's records indicate that the nearest relative (husband) is P.D. Merritt of Powell Station, TN, Bull Run Creek. (reburial, 1935) Dexter gave permission for Ethel to be moved by TVA from the Miller Cemetery to Cedar Grove Cemetery.

The graves are located at Cedar Grove Baptist church cemetary in Knox County, TN, about two miles east of exit 117 on I-75 on Racoon Valley Road and Norris Freeway. (US 441) Someone does tend to these graves...must be family somewhere nearby.

In 2018 Lela's son Ronnie Hughes, Ethel Merritt 's grandson, answered a message from me and provided the long missing photo of Dexter and Ethel. Ronnie has since passed. Grateful to him for this one precious photo we have.
