MIDLAND, MI Lawrence Southwick, of Midland, passed away Sunday April 17, 2005, at the Tendercare Nursing Home in Midland. He was 93 years old and is much mourned by his family and friends.

Lawrence Southwick was born in Worcester, MA on April 6, 1912. He was the 8th generation of Southwicks in the U.S. to be named Lawrence. He grew up on a farm and graduated from Leicester High School. He earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in Biology from the University of Massachusetts, where he spent 10 years on the faculty.

Lawrence came to Midland in 1945 for employment in Agricultural Chemicals at the Dow Chemical Company. He retired from Dow in 1977.

Lawrence married Caroline Ingram in 1937. They had three children, Dr. Lawrence Southwick, Jr. of Amherst, NY, Sarah Southwick of San Francisco, CA, and Dr. Edward Southwick, now deceased. Caroline Southwick passed away in 1980. He then married Lucile Strawser who survives him. He also has 7 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Lawrence was very active in the community. He was involved in the initial formation of the Midland Nature Club as well as the establishment of the Chippewa Nature Center and served on the first Boards of Directors of both groups. Lawrence was a charter member of the Midland Exchange Club, which was organized in 1959. He served as local President and as District Governor. In addition, he was permanent Chairman of the Club's Dining Club Program and worked to build other Exchange Clubs. Other groups to which he belonged included: Camera Club, Midland Antique Society, Historical Society, Midland Community Tennis Center, Dow Retirees, and the local chapter of AARP. He was a 50+ year member of Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Lawrence was an avid tennis player all his life and often expressed his delight with the Midland Community Tennis Center where he played for many years. Lawrence greatly enjoyed physical activity such as the aforementioned tennis. He climbed mountains, went parasailing in Mexico, climbed Ayers Rock in Australia, and walked on the Great Wall in China. He took pleasure in sailing his Flying Dutchman sailboat off his cottage at Sand Point on Lake Huron. Larry also participated in activities such as square dancing and was always an enthusiastic participant in the associated potluck dinners.

Lawrence's farm background was reflected in his employment, his gardening, his yard, and especially his apple trees. His book, Dwarf Fruit Trees, first written in 1947, is still for sale today. Lawrence also published Yankee Verse, a 1979 hard cover book of his father's poems as a tribute to his father.

Lawrence is survived by his wife Lucile, his son Dr. Lawrence Southwick, Jr., his daughter Sarah E. Southwick, two brothers, Albert Southwick, and Ralph Southwick, and two sisters, Ann Cutting and Sarah Phipps. He was predeceased by his son Dr. Edward Southwick, his brothers Nathan Southwick and Thomas Southwick and his sisters Mary Gilbert and Margaret Wilbur. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Lawrence Southwick III, Rebecca Johnston, Catherine Hume, Antje Due, Stefanie Capanna, Tara Vaughn, and Kelly Powell. There are five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at Memorial Presbyterian Church. Rev. Wallace H. Mayton III officiating. Mr. Southwick's family will receive friends at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler Street on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Burial will take place in the Quaker Cemetery in Massachusetts.
