Alexander CAMPBELL and his wife Margaret JOHNSTON were Ulster Scots, both born circa 1770 in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. They had four children JAMES, SAMUEL, ALEXANDER and ANDREW, all four sons were born in Ireland. It appears the family emigrated to America between 1812 and 1817. The family appears to arrive in Indiana county in the early 1820's. Alexander and Margaret owned 540 acres of land in Armstrong Township and built a log cabin on the property in 1823. The sons each inherited 135 acres of land from their parents estate. James would on his portion of the land for the rest of his life. The others eventually sold their portions. Alexander and Andrew moved to Alamakee County, Iowa. In 1980, James Campbell's descendent, Clair Shirley, moved the original log cabin onto his property on restored it.

Alexander and Margaret Campbell were members of the West Union Presbyterian Church.

Family history indicated Alexander's father's name was also Alexander Campbell and was born in Northern Ireland around 1750.

Alexander Campbell most likely died at some point between the 1840 and 1850 Census. His wife Margaret is listed as a widow in the 1850 Census.
