Rudolph was born on 25 January 1859 in Danzig, West Prussia (present day Gdansk, Poland). He was baptized on 13 Feb 1859 in Saint Nicolai Parish.
The St Nicolai church has a history on the site that can be traced back to 12th century. Painting on the northern wall of the church date from 1430. Saint Nicolai was the only church in Danzig to escape destruction during WWII.
Not even a month after his birth little Rudolph died on 20 Feb 1859. Church records show he was buried on 24 Feb 1859 in Stolzenberg. Three other siblings born in Danzig also died very young.
The family, (John, Anna & brother Gustav), left Danzig in August 1869 for America. The settled in Detroit, Michigan where sadly 3 more of their children would die very young.
