After serving in the Army during World War II, he met and married the love of his life, Mary Virginia Haynes. Franklin worked in Salem, VA, for General Electric and then moved to Monroe in 1970 with the Eaton Corporation. He retired several years ago.
Franklin loved to serve others and did so for over 40 years as a deacon in First Baptist Church in Monroe. As active members of the community, he and his wife, Mary, have volunteered at Loaves and Fishes, Meals on Wheels, and many committees in their beloved First Baptist Church. For three years they were named “Volunteers of the Year” for Union County. They have enjoyed many years living in Woodridge Village, a retirement community in Monroe.
In addition to helping others in the community, Franklin enjoyed vacationing at the beach, swimming at the Aquatic Center, gardening, visiting relatives, and spending time with his family.
Franklin is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mary Haynes Akers, his four children Kathy Akers Hirsch (Mike) of Pawleys Island, SC, Robert Akers, Jr., (Dawn) of Matthews, NC, Gary Akers (Robin) of Chester, VA, and Roger Akers of Chapel Hill, NC. He leaves behind his nine grandchildren, Steve Hirsch (Lawton) of Charleston, SC, Justin Hirsch (Mary Douglas) of Greenville, SC, Michael Hirsch of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Whitney Akers (Victoria) of Greensboro, NC, Austin Akers of Charlotte, NC, Dylan Akers of Chester, VA, Jessica Loper (Ron) of Chester, VA, Isaac Akers of Boston, MA, and Silas Akers of Chapel Hill, NC. He also has six great grandchildren, Haynes, Katherine, McKenzie, and Rigby Hirsch and Cadence and Ron Loper, Jr. He is also survived by his sister Judy Meece and his brothers, Fred, Russell, David, and Dennis Akers of Virginia.
A Celebration of Life will be held 3:00PM Saturday, November 14, 2020 at Lakeland Memorial Park, and the family will visit with friends and family prior to the service from 2:00 PM until 2:45 PM at Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Ave. Monroe NC 28112.
