John Telford McKee was the son of James Logan McKee, Ensign (14 Mar 1752 - 14 Aug 1832) and Jane "Jennie or Jennet" Telford (19 Oct 1754 - 30 Apr 1800). He was born on Kerrs Creek where his parents settled, coming from Pennsylvania. He attended the Old Monmouth Presbyterian Church on Whistle Creek, then about 4 miles west of of the current church. He was a magistrate of Rockbridge Co. for 30 years, church subscriber and also served as a ruling Elder, for 40 years. Now the New Monmonth P. C. has replaced the older building, next to the current cemetery, just around the corner from this McKee Cemetery, former called the Big Spring Cemetery on private property, once belonging to a long line of our McKees.

On 18 Nov 1806, G.A. Baxter married John McKee to Nancy Agnes Hanna, the daughter of Matthew Hanna and Martha Montgomery, in Rockbridge Co., Virginia (see below plus hand written minister's report on Familysearch, Virginia Marriages, 51/329).

They had 4 known McKee children, connected below:

His signature is on the 18 Nov 1806, Rockbridge Co., VA filed marriage bond, posted on his wife's site. John McKee. James McKee and Matthew Hanna bound themselves for $50 for the pending marriage of John McKee to Nancy Agnes Hanna, Matthew Hanna's daughter. The 3 men sign it, with their verified signatures.

Married - Last Tuesday by the Rev. George A. Baxter, Mr. John M'Kee, Jun., late a student of Washington Academy, to Miss Nancy Hanna, daughter of Matthew Hanna, Esq., of this place. (p. 1, c. 4) 22 Nov 1806 issue of the Lexington Intelligencer (VA). Tuesday was the 18th.

John T. McKee served in the War of 1812, as a lieutenant in 1808. He was an 1804 - 1806 alumni of Washington and Lee University, an officer and high sheriff of Rockbridge Co. (Catalogue of the Officers and Alumni of Washington and Lee University, 1749 - 1888, Baltimore, 1888, p 58, #248.)

McKee makes declaration, Jan 5th, 1835: For and on behalf of his mother (that's step mother), Nancy McKee, widow of James McKee, deceased; James died Aug 14, 1832, aged 80 years and 6 months; he was born in PA Mar 14th, 1752, and came with his brother to VA and settled on Kerr's Creek in the year "1754;" served under Col. William Christian; was substitute for William McKee; Colonel Dickinson, Capt. Charles Campbell, Lieut. Samuel Davidson, all now dead; served as Ensign under Col. John Bowyer, Capt. Thomas Harrison, Lieut. Alex. Wiley; mentions John Davidson, a pensioner, General Campbell, General Muhlenberg, Colonel Willis. William McKee, brother of James, deposes as to his services. Chronicles of The Scotch-Irish Settlement of VA, Lyman Chalkley, Vol. 2, p. 483.

On the 1850 Rockbridge Co., VA Census, I found farmer John T. McKee, age 67, with $8K in real estate; residing with married daughter Mary and her family. Farmer John C. Laird, 36; Mary S. Laird, 35; Attending school were kids: John H. Laird, 14; Samuel Laird, 10; Henry R. Laird, 8; Agness I. Laird, 6; At home: Alexander F. Laird, 4 and infant Mary E. Laird, 4/12, all VA born.

1 Jul 1854 recorded in Carroll County, Illinois Bounty Land, "Whereas, in pursuance of the Act of Congress, approved September 28th, 1850, entitled "An Act granting Bounty Land to certain Officers and Soldiers who have been engaged in the military service of the United States," Warrant #39497, 80 acres, issued in favor of John T. McKee, First Lieutenant in Captain Mathew's and Lewis Companies first Regiment, Virginia Militia, War of 1812." Located upon the "north half of the south west quarter of section 5 in Township 25 North of Range 4 east in the District of Lands subjecxt to sale at Dixon Illinois." The plat of survey which has been "assigned to Amos C. Stedman and his heirs." Carroll Co., IL Accession #MW-0784-077, 4th PM - 1815 IL, 025N - 004E, N 1/2SW1/4, section 5, Bureau of Land Management (see photo).

20 Aug 1858, Harrison Co., Missouri Bounty Land Warrant #11344
Whereas, in pursuance of the Act of Congress, approved March 3 1855, entitled "An Act in addition to certain Acts granting Bounty Land to certain Officers and Soldiers who have been engaged in the military service of the United States," there has been deposited in the GENERAL LAND OFFICE, Warrant No. 11,344 for 80 acres in favor of JOHN T. McKEE, Lieutenant, Captain Matthews Company, Virginia Militia, War of 1812... It was assigned by McKee to Benjamin Baker and his heirs. Bureau of Land Management, Accession #MW-0113-256, 5th PM, 065N - 029W, W1/2SW1/4, section 10 (see photo).

The said Warrant having been assigned by the said John T. McKee to Benjamin Baker, in whose favor said tract has been located.

Jas W McClungs' 1935 WPA survey of VA Historical Inventory #ROC419, says The Old Home of John C. Laird, located on Rt 60, 7 miles west of Lexington, VA. Included in report is a 1937 photo of the home. Original log home was believed "built by JOHN MCKEE in 1820," later owned by (son in law) J. C. Laird. The original land owner of Borden grant was John McKee. Home passed to John McKee's son William McKee. A list of the owners through 1937 is given in #4. A 2 story log building. #6 mentions the Indian attacks and fortification in the basement for protection from the Indians. Located 7 miles west of Lexington on Rt. #60. It's online at the Library of VA. Includes a photo.

The Rockbridge County, CA Death Register lists John T. McKee, a white male, died 29 Apr 1857 in Rockbridge of "Kidney Affection" aged 74 years, son of James and "S. J." McKee, born in Rockbridge, his son in law John C. Laird was the informant. The Rockbridge Co., VA Death Registers, 1853 - 1870, 1012 - 1917 by Angela M Ruley, Athens, GA, 1991, p 70.

Living at the Big Spring at various times were: John McKee, son James and Miss Telford. Martha Hanna McKee married Madison Dunlap and lived on Kerr's Creek (their graves are 2 of the 4 still standing at the McKee cemetery, the rest are on the ground, as best as I can tell since my visits there. Mary S. Dunlap married John C Laird and lived at the old homestead on Kerrs Creek until 1858. Samuel Wilson McKee (Mary A Davidson) lived at the Big Spring. John McKee, Jr. and Miss Simon(d)s of PA, settled in the upper end of the old McKee farm on Kerrs Creek, where John T. McKee lived and died. The farm belonged to Samuel R. Moore and J. Will Moore in about 1890. (McKees of VA and KY by George Wilson McKee, undated (died 1891), KY.

In 1990, I bought a copy of John T McKee's very hard to read will in Rockbridge Co., VA Will Book 14, p 262-63. Recorded 1 Jun 1857. At the Courthouse, Donna made the best copy she could and penciled in several names but it's really a bad copy.
