MATHEWS, Lawrence Grant Sr., DDS, passed away on July 1, 2009 at the age of 92. He was born in Atlanta, Ga., October 13, 1916 to Bessie and Chesley Mathews. He was raised in Huttig, Ark., and Deltaville, Va. by his Uncle Frank and Aunt Bessie Scott. A 1939 graduate of VMI he served as a Major in the Army Air Corps for four years in the South Pacific during WWII. He graduated from MCV Dental School in 1950 and opened one of the first family dental offices in Chesterfield. He practiced from 1950 to 2000 and retired at the age of 83. He celebrated 64 years of marriage to his wife, Evelyn Engleman Mathews, in June. He is also survived by his children (named). Also surviving are his grandchildren (named) and Great-grandchildren (named). His surviving siblings are Frank Mathews of Dequincy, La., and Betty Swift of Atlanta. Visitation will be held...Morriss & Son Funeral Home, Chester....with committal service and interment following at Sunset Memorial Park....
