CHESSLEY H. MATHEWS DIES AT HOSPITAL HERE. Chessley Howard Mathews, 51, of 880 Piedmont Avenue, for several years associated with City Attorney James L. Mayson, died at an Atlanta hospital Wednesday morning following an illness of two weeks. Prior to his connection with the city attorney, he was for several years an assistant superintendent of the Georgia Power Company street railway department. Born in Fort Valley, Mr. Mathews moved to Atlanta with his parents as a child and was educated in the public schools of this city. His first wife was the former Miss Bessie Chandler Scott, sister of L. D. Scott and Miss Emma Scott of Washington Seminary. After her death, Mr. Mathews was married to the former Miss Elizabeth Bailey. He was a nephew of Chessley B. Howard, prominent Atlanta cotton merchant. Besides his wife, Mr. Mathews is survived by two daughters, Miss Emily and Miss Betty Mathews, of Atlanta; five sons, Howard, William, Frank, Lawrence and Hampton Mathews, all of Atlanta; one sister, Mrs. Arthur Williams, and one brother, William B. Mathews, of Havre, France. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock this afternoon at the Spring Hill chapel of H. M. Patterson & Sons. Dr. S.H.C. Burgin will officiate and interment will be in West View cemetery...
