Obituary - John P. Dickinson.
John P. Dickinson was born near Kokomo, Indiana, January 14, 1851, and departed this life June 27, 1930, at the home of his son in Kellerton, Iowa, at the age of 79 years, five months and 13 days.
Mr. Dickinson was the youngest of 14 children, all of which have passed to the Great Beyond. He spent the greater part of his life in Iowa, having left Indiana when a young man. He was united in marriage to Malcena Barrett on October 6, 1880. To this union were born three children, Orpha Leota, who died in infancy; Gilbert L. and Mary Ethel. He lived in Story county, Iowa, for a time and then moved to Butler county, Nebraska, where his children were born. The wife's health failed so he gave up farming and sought to benefit her, but she passed away December 21, 1890. After her death he spent some time in the states of Washington and Kansas.
In 1899 he was married to Murvilla Stewart and settled on a farm near Colo, Iowa. She passed away two years later. He then came to Kellerton, Iowa, and for a number of years was employed by W. L. Frisby & Company and other business firms until he was forced to give up active work on account of his health.
In early life he was converted and became a member of the First Day Adventist church. His aim in life was that he should live bearing the marks that would be uplifting to the community in which he lived.
He leaves his son, Gilbert L., a daughter Ethel of Kellerton, Iowa; and one granddaughter, Mrs. Ralph Cronin of Schaller, Iowa; besides numberless near relatives and a host of friends who mourn his passing.
The funeral service was conducted from the home of his son, G. L. Dickinson, at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, June 29, 1930, by a nephew, H. A. Fish, pastor of the Seventh Day Adventist church of Marshalltown, Iowa. Interment being made in Maple Row cemetery at Kellerton, Iowa.
Relatives attending the funeral from out of town were J. K. Dickinson, D. M. Dickinson and Chester Dickinson from Colo, Iowa; J. W. Dickinson from Maxwell, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Fish from Marshalltown, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Scott and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Scott of Lamoni, Iowa; Mrs. Mamie Andrews and family and Mr. and Mrs. Dale Scott from Des Moines, Iowa; Mr. Clyde Wolfe and son of Bucyrus, Kansas and Mrs. Mattie Plum from Atchison, Kansas.
