PIONEER LAID TO REST AT LOSTINE - Service Held for Walter Carper, County Pioneer

Walter Ashley Carper was laid to rest in the Lostine cemetery Tuesday afternoon after a long and painful illness lasting several years.

He was born May 20, 1875 in West Virginia and came to Oregon while a young man and settled with several brothers and sisters in the north part of Wallowa County in what they termed The Promised Land.

He was the youngest son of George and Delilah Carper, and was married to Lula Barton January 11, 1910. To this union were born eleven children, ten of whom survive. They are: Mrs. Leo Kenworthy of Inchelium, Wash.; Mrs. Arthur Prince, Mrs. Gilbert Lyon and Mrs. Raymond Prince of Wallowa; Joe Carper of Long Beach, Calif.; Orville of Enterprise; Mrs. Vernon Stroope of Wilmington, Calif.; Mrs. James Richard, Lake Charles, La.; and Shirley and Robert of Lostine.

Besides his wife and children he leaves fifteen grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Julia Sannar of Wallowa, Mrs. Jennie Tyree of West Virginia, and Mrs. Susan Fleshman of Washington. He has two brothers, Joe Carper of Rochester, Wash.; and John of Promise.

Relatives and old neighbors attending the funeral were Mrs. Julia Sannar, Mr. and Mrs. John Carper and son Edgar, Mrs. and Mrs. John Lyons and daughter and husband, Mrs. Fisher Livery, Mrs. And Mrs. Frank Sannar, Mrs. Ford Hawley and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Lyons and children, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Prince and children, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Prince, James Barton, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Haney and children, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Haney, Mr. and Mrs. John Lyons. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sannar, Mrs. Bertha Carper and daughter Luella, Mrs. And Mrs. Silas Barton and family, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Trump, Mr. and Mrs. French Trump, Mr. and Mrs. Luther Trump, Mr. and Mrs. David Garrett, Earnest Snuffer and family, Ellis Haney, Mrs. "Lige" Barton, Mrs. Warren Clark, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Carper, Howard Carper, Lula, Orville and family, Shirley and Robert Carper.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Hurt of Wallowa. Mrs. Jennie Crow and son Melvin sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere: and "Old Rugged Cross" with Martha Crow at the piano.~~

A story related to me by my grandma Lula Mae (Barton) Carper... As a young man, maybe 15 years of age, Walter Ashley Carper and his father George Washington Carper ventured from Raleigh County, West Virginia to northeastern Oregon. They returned to West Virginia and gathered family and friends, returning to Oregon in the mid-1890's. By this time Daniel Mann and John Chandler Phillips had settled in what is now known as the Promise country. So I've always believed that George Washington Carper was the third man in town. The three families have inter married over and over through the years. Thanks for the memories!
