Arrangements pending for crash victim
Funeral arrangements had not been completed at press time today for Franklin Bryant, age 54, Morgan County native who died in a fiery truck crash on U.S. 50 east of Bedford early Wednesday morning. The Cure and Hensley Funeral Home is in charge.
Mr. Bryant, a truck driver for Farm Bureau Co-op for 10 years, moved to Switz City from Paragon in 1955. He was driving a Co-op oil tank truck when he was killed in a crash with another truck on a narrow bridge about 10 miles east of Bedford. The other vehicle was an empty cattle semi-trailer being driven by Richard Damm, 33 of Carlinville, Ill.
According to state and county police who investigated, Bryant's truck had been loaded earlier at Switz City with 5,700 gallons of fuel oil. He was en route east to Seymour when he plowed into the side of Damm's rig which had jack knifed as it entered a bridge over Back Creek. Damm's trailer skidded broadside through the bridge.
Bryant's truck, with the engine torn loose and the cab nearly sheared off burst into flames after the impact. Bryant was crushed and is believed to have died before the cab caught fire. His body was burned beyond recognition.
Damm, who suffered only a scratch on one knee, said he was rounding a curve when the right, front wheel of his tractor dropped off the pavement, sending the vehicle into a jackknife. He was charged with reckless homicide and bound over to the Lawrence County grand jury.
The crash, which occurred at 5:10, held up traffic on the highway for more than four hours before the wreckage could be cleared.
Mr. Bryant, whose mother, Mrs. Bell Fisher Bryant, now lives at Gosport, was born in Morgan County Feb. II, 1906. His father was the late Sam Bryant. He was member of the Samaria Baptist Church.
Survivors; beside the mother, are his wife, the former Evelyn Kappus, whom he married June 2, 1933; a daughter, Mrs. Robert Dalton Switz City; a son, Robert R. Bryant, who is in Naval service at Oak Harbor,Wash.; one granddaughter, and a sister, Mrs, Oral Applegate of Gosport. One son, a sister and a brother are deceased.
The son arrived late this morning from Washington and funeral arrangements are expected to be completed in time for publication
