Private - Company B - VMI Cadet - did not fight at the Battle of New Market - he was one of sixteen left to guard the school when the rest of the corps marched off to New Market. However, he was with the corps at Lynchburg, and then Richmond. He did not return to the corps when it reformed in the fall of 1864, but he did join his brother Captain James DeWitt Hankins with the Surry Light Artillery.
