GRANT, Helen E. (HANKINS) c.1833-1909

Vashti (Franklin Co.), Va., April 3. the remains of Mrs. Helen Grant were brought home from Staunton and interred near Grady on Tuesday in the family graveyard. She is survived by the following children: Messrs. John, George, Jeff D, and Isaac Grant, and Mrs. Washington Manning. She was before marriage, a Miss Hankins and was about 80 years of age at the time of her death. She was an industrious and highly respected lady and throughout the many vicissitudes of a widowed life, with a family of male children to rear, she maintained a high and honorable character and stood for the highest standard of a Christian example.
[Her marriage is listed in Henry County Register of Marriages No. 1, 1853-1893, p. 1, line 7, 17 Nov. 1853: Isaac S. Grant, 21, Resides Pittsylvania Co., Son of James Hankins, married Helen E. Hankins, 20, Resides Henry Co., Dau. of John H. Hankins.
Helen is listed with her family in the 1880 census, Callands, Pittsylvania Co., Va., page 73C, all GRANT surnames, all born in Va.: John J., Head of Household, 25, Farmer; Helen E., Mother, 47; Isaac, Brother, 20; J. D., 18, Son - this appears to be an error - this is Jeff D., his brother, only 7 years his junior).
