The first child of Philip Howard and Rachel Davis Campbell. Joseph Benjamin Howard, was born April 9, 1842 in Graves County, Kentucky. He married Susan Margret Whitworth, October 23, 1867 in Graves County, Kentucky, daughter of Isaac Whitworth and Sarah Charles McDade Whitworth. Joseph Benjamin served in the Confederate Kentucky Mounted Infantry during the Civil War. In the 1870 Kentucky census, JB is listed as living next door to his parents in Graves County, Kentucky. The first four children of JB and Susan were born in Kentucky. Joseph Benjamin "JB" took his wife and children with her parents about 1877 to the central part of Texas, where more children were born. They had 9 children, but only 7 living by the 1900 census. I have no record of the two unknown children, but according to my grandfather their names were possibly Sam or Dan.
Sometime during the late 1870's, the Joseph Benjamin Howard family went to California, but returned to Texas. A bridge was being built over Red River into Chickasaw Indian Territory, near a town later called Terral, Oklahoma. Several of the young Howard boys were working to help build the bridge. Joseph and Susan had come to Indian Territory before 1900, as shown in the census. They were living in the Indian Territory when the area became a State. By 1910 they moved to Dallas County, Texas. Before 1920 they had migrated toward Ardmore, Oklahoma, where they would make their home. Joseph Benjamin died September 23, 1923 in Ardmore, Carter County, Oklahoma.
