Thomas was the fifth of ten known children born to John W Whiteside, Jr and Eleanor Kelly Whiteside. He married Rachel Hemphill 15 November 1813. They had nine known children: John General Jackson, Thomas Hemphill, James Hardy, Mary Jane, Andrew Marion, Marcus De Lafayette, William Lamar Decatur, Jonathan Calhoun, and an unnamed infant. After Rachel's death in 1833, Thomas married Jane Flack 14 July 1834. They had one known child: Aaron Whittington.
