William was the first of ten known children born to John Whiteside, Jr and Eleanor Kelly Whiteside. He and Elizabeth Ledbetter married 19 July 1805 in Rutherford Co, NC. They had 14 known children: Joseph Underwood Whiteside who married Mary Martin Edwards; Noah who married Malinda Lynch; John who married Rhoda Williams and later Mary Patton Morris; Richard C who married Sarah Walker Edgerton and later Caroline Foote; Humphrey Posey who married Frances A Walker; Nancy Clarisa who married Taliaferro Davenport Lynch; Eleanor who married Thomas Nicholas Edgerton; Mary Ann who married Elisha Edmond Sebastian; Sarah Kate who married Charles Duncan; Jonathan Lafayette who married Mary Cynthia Logan and later Nancy Ledbetter; Elizabeth who married Jones Overton Williams; Martha Adaline who married Noah King Whiteside (her second cousin); Malinda H who married James Pickney Webb; Amanda Louisa who married James H Blanton and later Martin Edwards.
