LOGAN - Following a valiant battle with cancer, our loving mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and example of goodness, Evelyn Leatham (Taylor) Smith, 78, passed away at her home on June 7, 2009.
Evelyn was born Sept. 7, 1930, in Wellsville, to John A. and Margaret Parker Leatham. She was raised on the family farm where she spent many hours learning the value of hard work alongside her parents and siblings. She attended Wellsville Elementary School and South Cache High School. As a child, Evelyn developed many lifelong friends - namely, Margie N., Margie M., Bonnie and Stella. During her youth she learned the value of loving, supporting and caring for all of her family members.
Evelyn married John "Jack" W. Smith on Nov. 4, 1949, in Wellsville. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. Evelyn and Jack made their first home in Hyrum and later moved to Logan. Jack owned a successful masonry business before being tragically killed in a snowmobile accident on Easter morning in 1968. Evelyn was left to raise their six children, ages 6 to 17.
Following Jack's death, Evelyn provided sole support for her six children, working long hours at several jobs. She worked at Gold Strike Stamps, Clearfield Cheese, and as a supervisor at Wurlitzer Piano. She was later employed for 12 years at the USU post office where she retired in 1995.
In 1986, Evelyn married Dale Taylor. Evelyn and Dale loved dancing together and enjoyed the company of their many dogs. They loved supporting their children and grandchildren. Evelyn and Dale were later divorced.
Evelyn was a lifelong bowler. She competed in the Wednesday night league as a member of the Jack's Tire and Oil and Bullen's teams. She loved her time at Logan Lanes with her bowling friends, where she once rolled a lifetime-high game of 257. In recent years, she has enjoyed "schooling" her grandchildren in bowling, each of whom received bowling shoes as a gift from their grandmother.
Holidays and family celebrations were always a joyful time during Evelyn's life. Many family traditions were formed and celebrations took place in her home. Her home was always filled with family, food and presents and her love for every family member overflowed.
Evelyn traditionally spent her Saturdays with her mother, sisters and, later, her daughters, shopping and going to lunch.
Her greatest love in life was gathering family at her home for Sunday and Monday dinners. Evelyn had a deep love for her 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Evelyn passed along many valuable life lessons in her home to her family, and her support of their activities and hobbies was endless. She loved watching her grandchildren perform in sports, music, dance and many other activities, always their greatest fan.
One of Evelyn's greatest attributes was her sense of humor. She was quick with a one-liner to cheer someone up, make her company laugh, or to help others keep perspective of life. Evelyn was also a shining example of charity. Her happiness came from helping those around her find happiness through whatever resources were at her disposal to improve their welfare. She showed pure love, tireless love, selfless love, always asking, "What can I get or do for you?"
Evelyn is survived by her six children, three sons and three daughters: Craig L. Smith of Logan; Rodney W. Smith of Logan; Pamela S. Anderson (T. Gary) of Hyrum; Andrea S. Emmett (Bob) of Irvine, Calif.; Jana L. Hansen (Michael) of Smithfield; and Mark J. Smith (Laura) of North Logan; her three sisters, Ruth Siqueiros, Virginia Darley and Linda Singleton.
Evelyn was preceded in death by husbands, John "Jack" W. Smith and Dale Taylor; her parents, John A. Sr. and Margaret (Rita) Parker Leatham; her brother, John Leatham, two brothers who died at birth; sister, Margaret Perry; and grandson, Brandon C. Smith.

Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday, June 11, in the Hyrum North Stake Center, 245 N. Apple Drive (750 East), Hyrum, with President T. Gary Anderson conducting. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Allen-Hall Mortuary and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the church. Interment will be at the Hyrum City Cemetery.
