Wendell Irl Ammons, 66, died unexpectedly Monday, Dec. 22, 1986 at his home in Douglas. He was born June 12, 1920 in Harrison, Nebraska; the son of James and Hattie (Bixbe) Ammons. He was a twin. As an infant his family moved to Douglas and took up a homestead near Orpha. He was reared and educated at Orpha. He worked on various ranches before entering the U.S. Navy in December, 1941. He was discharged in August, 1946. He married Marian Cottle Sept. 5, 1948 at Douglas. He worked construction for Knisely-Moore, as a bartender, and his last 11 years working as a janitor at Douglas Middle School for the Converse County School District. He retired from his job in February 1986. He is survived by his wife, Marian, of Douglas; two sons, Richard and Garry Ammons, both of Douglas; two daughters, Connie Middaugh and Penelope Helms, both of Douglas; two brothers; four sisters; seven grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
