Son of William A Cleland and Jeannie Kiziah Mann, born in Jackson County, Kansas where he joined older sister Lola Z Cleland.

Willard married Maude Gibbons, of Missouri, on 25 August 1897 in Noble County, Oklahoma, where Willard's family had recently moved to from Kansas. Per the 1900 Census, Willard was farming land adjacent to (or possibly the same land) as his father.

In 1898 their first child was born. Their children, as recorded in the 1900 and 1910 Census are:

-- Grace: born June 1898, OK
-- Earl: born Feb 1900, OK
-- Delmar (son): born 10 Sep 1902, Noble County, OK

Tragedy befell the family in 1903 as Maud died that August. Reason unknown, but could have been related to childbirth; if so, it appears the child died also.

With 3 young children and the need to provide support, Willard' children were taken in by his parents as evidenced by their presence in their home in the 1910 Census where Grace is 11, Earl 10, and Delmar, 7. This presented a houseful for William and Jeannie as 4 of their own children, all male, were still at home. Their youngest, Saul, was 10, however, so hopefully the children fit in comfortably with their "youngish" uncles.

1910 was the last Census Willard is in due to his early death in 1915. He is living in Wichita, Kansas. I found a wife and stepson in the household, so clearly Willard had remarried (did not find a marriage record). His wife was Nora, age 29, born Kansas (father born England, mother born Pennsylvania). Willard is working as a laborer doing "street work" per the Census. With them are 7 year old W. F, Barringer, age7, most likely Nora's son from a prior marriage (the Census indicates she had 3 children, all living).

Willard is also found in the 1912, 1913, and 1914 Wichita City Directories where he is also listed as a laborer. Interesting that the 1914 Directory shows his employer, J. S. Smith Hide Company; assume this means preparing cow hides for sale, probably a common industry for cattle-country Wichita.

The last record I found for Willard was one of the first I found, his Death Certificate. I was uncertain for a time if this was the Willard Cleland I was looking for as it shows he died in St. Joseph, Missouri. However, it appears Willard was living in St. Joseph from what I see on the Certificate. Willard died of a heart attack at age 37, now leaving his 3 children truly orphaned at relatively young ages.

I am honored to prepare this Memorial for Willard and will be happy to transfer to a descendant as I am not related to the Cleland family.
