He came to this country on June 30, 1883 with his wife and 5 children. They arrived in New York, on the SS Neckar. The children arriving with them were recorded as Louisa, Wilhelm, Reinhart, Andreas, and Elise.
According to his son Andrew's naturalization papers, they went straight to Ohio.
They lived in Shirley City in Allen County Indiana, near Fort Wayne. By profession, he was a carpenter, which he would pass down to his son Levi. On the census, he is listed as a farmer.
He applied to become a citizen, but it seems never followed through, as I have not found those papers. It's thought that perhaps he misunderstood, and thought signing the paper meant he would become a citizen. He listed himself as naturalized in 1910. Toward the end of his life he resided again in Cleveland. His wife Katherine passed away in 1926. Most of his children lived in or around Cleveland at the time of his death. He lived to be 95.
Father of: William, Louisa Krause, Reinhart, Andrew, Elise(Lizzie) Bougie, Elsie Stauffer Allen, Emil, Louis, Levi, and Daniel. 3 Infant daughters preceded him, plus two other children of whom nothing is known. Grandfather of 15 at time of passing.
