John Robert Dorough's parents are Milton B Dorough (1820-1890) & Emily M Cosper Dorough (1819-1883). John had nine known brothers & sisters. He married Sarah Jane Lucinda Huffman (1856-1936) whose parents were Henry (1828-1896) & Angeline M Jacks Huffman (1832-1903). John & Sarah Jane are the parents of eight children: Emma Angelin, Henry Warner, Robert Wilburn, William Milton, Lela Berenice, Elbert Ellice, Ella Lelia, & Floyd Jasper Dorough. John was a land owner & farmer. John Robert's paternal genealogy goes back to Abner B Dorough (Dublin, Ireland) & Mary Dudley, James City, VA. John Robert's maternal genealogy goes back to Henrick Gasper (or Henry Gasperd or Henryck Gasper) originally from Dossenheim, Germany who arrived in Charlestown, SC on Feb 10, 1768 among a group of French and German protestants aboard the ship "Brigantine St Peter", William Cawley, master. The group was organized by a French Huguenot, Jean Louis du Mesnil de St Pierre. The ship left London, England on Sept 26, 1767 headed for Halifax, Nova Scotia but was blown off course by a storm. The record of St Pierre's passengers petition for land under the Bounty Act of 1761 is found in Council Journal 34, page 101-103, Meeting of 9th March 1768. Refer to Protestant Immigrants to S. Carolina, 1763-1773, Petitions for Land, 1763-1773, Page 112 and info on the Hillsborough settlement is given in "The Making of McCormick County", by Bobby F Edmonds; Cedar Hill Unltd; 1999; pp.73-77.
