Lafayette Rowland was born on 04 Dec 1845 in Boone County, Missouri. His parents were Thomas Rowland & Kathryn Elizabeth Alexander. He was the youngest of nine children.

Lafayette served during the Civil War. He was recruited by Captain Caleb Perkins Missouri Infantry, Battalion Co. F. Perkins' Battalions were composed primarily of men recruited North of the Missouri river and it started off being a Calvary Unit. Around Sept. 1864 it managed to cross the Missouri River and head south. Perkins' Battalion was assigned to Col. Chas. H. Tyler's brigade of Missouri recruits. Lt. Col. Caleb Perkins was 1st Commander and later commanded by Lt. Col. Quinton Peacher. It accompanied Gen. Sterling Price on his 1864 Missouri raid. In April 1865 it was assigned to Mitchell's Infantry brigade, Parson's Division. They were paroled on June 7th in Alexandria, Louisiana and there are no known existing muster rolls.

After his service in the Civil War, Lafayette returned home to Boone County, Missouri.
He was united in marriage to Mary E. "Mollie" Yeager on 02 Dec 1875. Mary died in 1879, just a few weeks after the birth of their 2nd daughter (due to postpartum complications).

Lafayette married his 2nd wife, Alice Kirtley, on 02 Dec 1880 in Boone County, Missouri.
