John Fluney and his sister Mary Ann, who was married to John Moriarty of Arthur, Ontario were natives of Ireland. Johns parents died enroute to Canada as "there was not enough food to eat on the ship" and "the parents bodies were buried at sea" according to family stories. Possibly the parents health was compromised due to the famine in Ireland. Their parents names are unknown; and where they were living in Ireland. Family stories relate that the Fluneys came from "Cork", Ireland. John Moriarty and John Fluney owned land together in Ontario and it is believed that John Moriarty came from County Kerry..Other family stories said that John Fluney may have been 9 months or 9 years of age when arriving in Canada; that they were originally Catholic and their name was changed. There is a possibility they were all enroute to United States but were redirected to Canada.

According to family research, John Fluney owned land in 1867, with John Moriarty on Lot 25, Concession 1, West Garafraxa in Wellington County, Ontario. He and Caroline lived there from about the time of their marriage in September 1870 until about 1881, then moved to Concession 2, Lot 256 / 257 Melancthon Township, near Corbetton.

In the 1871 census for West Garafraxa, Wellington County, Ontario- John and Caroline Fluney were Farmers. They were of the Church of England faith.

John and Caroline Fluney were Farmers at Corbetton, Melancthon, Dufferin County, Ontario. They were Methodist in the 1881 census.

John Fluney, Mrs. Fluney and John Fluney, Jr. were members of the Corbetton Methodist Church between 1889 and 1890. John Fluney, Sr. was a " Steward" in the Church. The old church had been moved to the Dufferin County Museum grounds.

John, Caroline and their family were Farmers living at W 2/10 -176 at Melancthon, Grey East, Ontario in the 1891 Census. They were Methodist.

In the 1940 National Registration for Canada, his son John Fluney of Tramping Lake, Sk. stated that his father John Fluney was born at Dublin, Ireland.
