Obituary from her funeral program:

Clara Ruth Newlin Valdera was born March 23, 1927 in South Philadelphia, PA to the late Agnes Letitia Newlin & Aubrey Raymond Newlin, Sr. She was one of six children and the eldest of four daughters. Clara was the beauty of the family, long blonde hair, and beautiful blue eyes. She suffered with rheumatic fever as a young child which weakened her heart but never her will, nor her strong spirit. She naturally assumed the position of leadership among her siblings. As a child she was confirmed at the St. Simon of the Cyrenian Episcopal Church. Clara attended the local schools and graduated from South Philadelphia High School for Girls in June, 1945, with a diploma in commercial education; this education provided the skills that she would later utilize as both an Administrative Assistant with the Philadelphia Public School System, and as a Legal Secretary until her retirement in 1995.

At the age of 16, during the second WW, she waitressed at the "Quaker Lady," considered at that time a 5-star restaurant. This job not only provided Clara with income, but enriched her life; as it was here she met many of her lifelong friends. Clara cherished her friends; always popular, always personable, always Clara.

United in marriage at the age of 25 to Feliciano (Felix) Valdera, she was the loving mother of Sharon Lynn, Trummell (Tootie) Letitia, and Feliciano (Felix) Fernandez. The family resided in the Germantown/Mt. Airy section of Philadelphia, PA. A devoted homemaker and mother for many years, she focused on rearing her family. Clara also enjoyed entertaining the many friends, family members, neighbors and musical and local radio celebrities with her lavish culinary skills and warm hospitality.

Being a real People's-Person and an avid pinochle player, Clara enjoyed her affiliations in two social organizations; The Gaytimers Club and a local women's pinochle club. Another of Clara's personal signatures was her unrelenting passion to remember and send scores of birthday greetings to the many family members, acquaintances and friends she cultivated over her life... (Out of sight, but never truly out of mind)...sharing a lifetime of spreading joy, laughter, warmth, kindness and yes..., her wisdom, colorful personality and sometimes, her strong opinions.

After two years of challenging illnesses and hospitalizations, Clara, a courageous dweller, peacefully experienced her transition and blessing of release on July 30, 2003 to the place the Lord had prepared for her, her eternal resting place in God's Arms. With unconditional love and respect of her family and friends alike, she leaves behind, one surviving sister, Katherine Thomas; her three children, Sharon Nelson, Trummell & Felix Valdera; five grandchildren, Robby Nelson, Senalda, Nina, Miguel & Fernanda Valdera; one great-grandchild, Katelynn Grauber; a sister-in-law, Syretha Carter; a son-in-law, Leon C. Jones; a lifetime friend, Elaine Young, who was with Clara at her transition; Fatmata Barrie, dutiful and untiring companion; many relatives and a legion of special friends. We are all so grateful for the privilege of having had Clara to share in and enrich our lives!
