William was a biological son of Indiana Applegate (1807-1849). He was given the surname of "McMonigle." It has not been determined if he was legally adopted by Thomas J. McMonigle (1807-1889).

William served in the 13th Indiana Cavalry, Company F, 131st Indiana Volunteers, during the Civil War. He had a permanent disability as a result of his war service and he eventually died of uncontrollable seizures.
William died in Indianapolis in an Indiana State Hospital and he was apparently buried in an unidentified cemetery in Indianapolis.
