Loren L. Airgood, 95, of Anderson, died July 14, 2007, at Saint John's Medical Center.

Loren, also known as "Uncle Bugs" and "Bugsy," was born on March 18, 1912, in Servia, Ind., the son of Court and Della (Miller) Airgood.

He spent his childhood in Servia and on a farm on Ridinger Lake. He then moved with his family to Mishawaka, where he worked at Ball Band Company and as an usher at the Palace Theatre during the Vaudeville era.

In 1931 he moved to Berrien Center, Mich., where he met his wife, Alleyne Brenner Airgood, and married her on Feb. 26, 1940. He owned and operated the South End Grocery in Benton Harbor. He later worked for Whirlpool Corp. for 36 years, retiring in 1977. He enjoyed traveling and traveled the country visiting family and friends and especially enjoyed visits to the national parks.

He enjoyed many years babysitting and playing cards and games with his grandchildren. He was an avid Cubs fan and attended games from the 1920s throughout his life. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and attended Crystal Springs Church of God. He moved to Anderson three years ago to be near family.

Survivors include four children, Laretta Shumate, husband Charles, of Anderson, Linda Neal, husband James of Lompoc, Calif., Larry Airgood of Estes Park, Colo., and Rex Airgood of Benton Harbor, Mich.; two grandchildren, Chausette (husband Lou) Arenal of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Chara (husband Philip) Lavelle of Anderson; four great-grandchildren, Louis, Chase, Addison and Arabella.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alleyne (Brenner) Airgood, in 2004.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at the Starks Menchinger Family Funeral Home, St. Joseph, Mich., with Dr. Charles R. Shumate and the Rev. Fred Davey officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in Berrien Center, Mich.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
